Most "best VPN" articles are affiliate content, ordered by revenue share rather than performance. Only a few things actually decide your experience: whether logs are kept, whether the business model is transparent, whether it connects on the network you're actually on, and whether the mobile app is pleasant to use. Encryption algorithms are the one thing not worth agonising over — mainstream services use the same standard protocols. Confirm the first two points, then test the speed yourself.

It must state plainly that browsing history, IPs and connection timestamps aren't recorded. Vague "certain technical information" leaves room to log.
Revenue model
How the service earns should be obvious — subscriptions or ads. When you can't tell at all, user data is usually the product.
Mobile behaviour
Phones switch between Wi-Fi and cellular constantly. Fast reconnects and background stability matter more than peak speed.
Works on restricted networks
On tightly managed networks many well-known VPNs simply won't connect. Reachability is a feature, not a review score.
Account required?
No signup means the provider holds no identity data to leak. That's a real privacy difference, not marketing.

Watch what "free" hides: a common 500 MB a month lasts a couple of hours. Check before installing.
