iPhone VPN setup: install, connect, troubleshoot.

From the App Store download to allowing the VPN profile — and what to do when pages still won't load after connecting.

Available now on iOS and Android.

Short answer

You don't enter server details on iPhone.

Plenty of guides send you into Settings → General → VPN & Device Management to type in a server address, account name and IKEv2 parameters. That path exists for corporate configurations; ordinary users don't need it. Install a VPN app and iOS asks once, on first connect, whether to allow a VPN configuration — confirm with Face ID or your passcode. After that it's a single tap in the app. The VPN badge in the status bar tells you it's active.

Troubleshooting

Six places iOS usually trips people up.

If it connects but still misbehaves, it's almost always one of these.

No permission prompt appeared

iOS asks only on first connect. If you tapped Don't Allow, remove the old profile under Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and connect again.

No VPN badge in the status bar

The connection didn't actually establish. Toggle it off and on; if the badge still doesn't appear, restart the iPhone and retry.

Connected but pages won't load

Fully close and reopen the browser or app. iOS caches failed connections, and restarting the app usually clears it.

Drops when switching Wi-Fi

Moving between Wi-Fi and cellular rebuilds the tunnel — that's expected. Wait a few seconds and the app reconnects on its own.

Low Power Mode interferes

Low Power Mode limits background activity and can let the system suspend the VPN. Turn it off if the connection is unstable.

App not found in the App Store

Some apps are listed per region. Check our App Store region guide, or use an alternative download route.

The VPN badge in the status bar means it's live.
